Sleep // 日記

It has been very long since I last posted something here. Well... I did think of something to write but I felt that it is a sensitive topic so I decided not to risk it. As the title suggests, I am going to write about "Sleep" today.

Some people may wonder why write about sleep or what is there to talk about sleep. Basically, I chanced upon an article a few weeks back about how to reduce the amount of sleeping time.

As many people know, sleep is very important and there are reports explaining the reasons such as mood, learning, memory and weight etc. Have you realised that as you grow older, the number of hours you sleep actually decrease? I guess the main reason is due to the increasing activities and commitments we have.

A normal human usually requires 7-8 hours of sleep to be fresh the next day. However, some of us just cannot afford it. The article I read actually wrote about polyphasic sleep patterns which means sleeping multiple times in a day. Basically, if we practise monophrasic sleep pattern, we would require about 8 hours of sleep. However, if you practise uberman sleep pattern (a type of polyphasic sleep patterns), you would only need to sleep for 2 hours!

So how does the uberman work? Basically, you need to stick to a strict sleeping pattern whereby you take 6 20-minutes nap in a day. That means you sleep every 4 hours. Of course, the con is that if you miss one of your naps, you will be sleep-deprived and you will need to take hours of sleep to recover from the negative effect. Moreover, prolonged practice may result in a weakened immune system.

Before I end, I would like to kindly caution people that try to adopt the polyphasic sleep patterns to use them at your own risk. Ok sleep well guys and have a nice dream!

Bend, Not Break!

I have been reading this book titled "Bend, Not Break" for the past one week plus. This book talks about the CEO of Geomagic overcoming obstacles and from being a nobody to attaining the Entrepreneur of the year award. It was very inspiring and I really learned quite a lot from it. After completing the book, I was thinking about how many people can actually survive such harsh condition and turn dismal into hope and success. It really requires a lot of determination and willpower to do so. Thus, we should be grateful with what we have currently. Gratitude and Appreciation.

Also, the title "Bend, Not Break" reminded me about one thing. One should be willing to change its approach in face of obstacles. Quite often, we always hear conflicts between so and so. I believe these conflicts were caused by parties not willing to give in or accommodate the other party. Perhaps due to personal ego issue, people always like to use hard approach against those using it. What they did not realise is that if they are willing to give in, things may not get worse or ugly and there might be a happy ending whereby there is a win-win situation. This makes me recall a Chinese proverb "忍一时风,退一步海阔天空。" Sometimes, we need to be calm and see the bigger picture and not let emotion overwhelm us.

Like a bamboo in face of strong wind, bend and dont break! =)

I just want to add on to my introduction yesterday that please bear with my atrocious English. I know there are some grammatical errors here and there. I will try to improve like how I always strive to better myself. Thank you!

Beginning of a new dawn / "Success"

Hi all,

I have started blogging again with only one thing in mind - to consolidate all my thoughts here. After so many failed attempts in blogging, I have mustered up enough courage to start another one. However, this time round, the posts will not be what I do etc. I am one who love to think and question. Thus, I decided to have this special place to pen down my thoughts and share them with people.

First, I would like to say that if at any moment, you find my posts insulting or naive, please feel free to tell me by leaving a comment or write a personal email to me. If not, you can basically press the "X" button at the top right of your screen. I am not trying to say that I am going to do any defamatory comments but humans ,being humans, have different ways of interpreting things.

The place will be filled with my personal thoughts, insights and analysis of things. I would like to say that my comments might not be wise or smart enough so please bear with me. After all, this is my place and my sole purpose here is to pen down my wild thoughts. =)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the title suggests, I will be talking about this one word "Success". These few days, I have been thinking about how can I be successful. Then, I questioned myself what is success. The definition of success is depending on individual and I thought for quite long. A quick search in dictionary.com suggests that success is either 1. the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors or 2. the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.

Just by the definition from dictionary.com, it seems like success, to probably a lot of people, is the attainment of wealth or recognition. This intrigues me if success should be weighed with the amount of wealth you attain or the honour you received. I have yet to find my definition of success. However, as I was trying to find it, I saw a quote from Albert Einstein "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value." This somehow led me to believe that my future success must be born due to my personality and contribution to the society.

If you just take a look at the world nowadays, I would say Bill Gates, Steve Jobs(just to list a few) as successful people. For Bill Gates case (correct me if I am wrong), he build a foundation that supports goodwill initiatives. For Steve Jobs, he bought the world into the craze of smartphones and provide a breakthrough in the technological world. I still remember when I heard his decease, I wrote this on my facebook "He might leave but he will never be forgotten".

All these people have contributed something to the society. Critics may argue that what you see might not be the case and that they can contribute because they are rich. Yes, I understand where these critics come from. However, success to me is intangible and cannot be weighed against something.

Sometimes, I do wonder if humans, desperately chasing after wealth and honours, have lost sight of a lot of more valuable things. Success vs happiness? Haha...

To end off, as we try to pursue success in life, we need to be clear of our own definition of success and never lose sight of what is precious to us. Successful grievances or precious happiness? Your choice, your life! Choose it wisely! =)

P.S. I am not saying that you cant be successful and happy at the same time but if you want to deny that while chasing after such success as defined by dictionary.com you will not lose anything, you are just living in a state of self-denial. However, I do hope everyone will be successful and happy in the end.
